Patrons from Evanston, Skokie, Northbrook, Wilmette, Des Plaines, Morton Grove, and various other local communities have discovered what Glenview residents have known for a long time – that Card & Party Giant is a great local party store. Until you cross the threshold, it is impossible to imagine how much this party store has to offer. Newer customers from Evanston and Skokie have shared their surprise at the size of the store. The inventory is vast and constantly changing. The people who work at the store engage in a never-ending cycle of rotating one season or holiday’s inventory with an upcoming season’s products. Holiday greeting cards are in a never-ending cycle of rotation from New Year’s to Christmas, from Valentine’s Day and Easter to Mother’s and Father’s Day, and from Halloween, Thanksgiving back to Christmas.  And, as party decorations from Easter are packed and stored, the graduation party supplies, First Holy Communion and the patriotic party decorations are on display to help patrons prepare for the spring and summer party season. If you’re hosting a party, stop in. We’ll be at Card & Party Giant on the west side of Waukegan Avenue, just south of Lake Avenue in Glenview. If you like our store and are a Google member, we’d love an online review.  As a small, local business, service is our business! We look forward to meeting new customers every day!

Bookends of Summer 0

patrioticsettingMemorial Day and Labor Day are the unofficial bookends of summer. We open with Patriotic party supplies bought in sufficient quantities to last from Memorial Day through the 4th of July.  Then we move on to our summer party supplies that accentuate picnic and garden tables throughout the season. But how do we prepare for a backyard barbeque over Labor Day weekend? Well, of course, we return to the patriotic party supplies because Labor Day is, after all, a celebration of what America stands for – good old-fashioned pride in our work and our workers. And there is nothing more red, white, and blue than recognizing the blood, sweat and tears shed in building this great country of ours. While it is not known exactly who created Labor Day, it is widely agreed that the day recognizes workers’ contributions to our country, its strength and prosperity.  Labor Day celebrates the labor movement in the United States and was officially recognized as a legal holiday by Congress in the late 1880’s.  Because of the time of year, Labor Day often is the last weekend where one has a pretty fair chance at enjoying weather good enough for a backyard barbeque. As you set your table to entertain your last guests of the summer season, take a moment to thank those whose diligent efforts made our lives easier. With the sweat of their brow they built this country.  With the leadership of an organized labor movement, they prevailed against unfair labor practices, sought to ensure reasonable wages and working hours, creation of safe working environments and protections for injured workers, just to name a few. Let us recognize their efforts as we celebrate on this upcoming three-day unofficial end-of-summer weekend.

Lazy Days of Summer 0

mariefleur-guest-towelThe “lazy days of summer” conveys the idea that it’s just too hot to get out and do things. Not true in the retail world. A casual observer may not see it, but so much happens behind the scenes to stay ahead of the cycle of seasons and holidays to keep patrons coming back. Watching the store undergo constant rotations of on-the-floor inventory is an amazing sight. In the past three or four months, Easter rolled up as Mother and Father’s Day roll out. Graduation party supplies took front and center stage only to move a little further back and finally be packed up to make room for the patriotic party goods that are popular for 4th of July celebrations. The cycle continues as summer party accessories take up a fair amount of floor space next to beautifully displayed elegant entertaining plates, napkins, and glassware perfect for your summer brunch or afternoon tea party. Unless you are a regular in-store customer, there is no way to appreciate the constant change and continuous flow of moving merchandise to cater to the patron’s needs. And this doesn’t even account for the constant restocking of balloons or the aisles where birthday party supplies or everyday ware are located. What you see is a never-ending cycle necessary to keep Card & Party Giant’s inventory fresh, restocked, and seasonally appealing. So, there are no lazy days of summer. While August may not see as much foot traffic – though we stay ready for your patronage - the activity never stops. Time is used preparing for end-of-summer parties and for Halloween. As parents get kids ready for back-to-school, CPG is readying its inventory of costumes for both in-store and online sales. The staff are to be commended for their attention to detail, their understanding of local values and preferences, and their diligence to keeping inventory appealing and restocked. It is a daunting task, but small family-owned businesses like CPG rely on highly professional folks to do it with the ease that comes of experience. Unlike large corporate competitors, CPG cannot rely on a large advertising budget. Rather it thrives through word-of-mouth of the satisfied north shore customer from Evanston and Glencoe, Glenview and Northbrook, Lake Forest and Highland Park, Skokie and Wilmette, Morton Grove and Niles, and places north, south, east and west of CPG’s store at 1318 Waukegan Road, Glenview, IL. Please stop by today to see what’s in stock. CPG is a family-friendly store that caters to its local community.

A Party Almost 200 Years in the Making 0

patrioticThis year we get a 4th of July bonus. The holiday falls on Saturday. Thus many businesses are closed on Friday (we’re open so even last minute shoppers can get the best patriotic party supplies). Almost all are eager to see spectacular bursts of color in the sky throughout Independence Day weekend.  Not only is it an excuse for the little ones to stay up late and don their favorite glow jewelry, it also is a time for families to come together and celebrate the birth of our country. In the Midwest it has particular importance as one of the few holidays that generally promises good weather for an outdoor party. The Continental Congress voted for independence on July 2nd in 1776, but it took two days before the document, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, was complete. If you order your balloons on July 2nd they’ll be ready for pick up on July 4th, the date that makes U.S. Independence from Great Britain, or as we call it, the birthday of the United States. Back then there were 13 colonies; today three are 48 states, all united to recognize our forefathers and our country’s independence.  And we do it in style.  It is estimated that there are more than 14,000 firework displays across the country. And who knows how many backyard parties, picnics, parades, or barbeques are held each year. We are in the heat of summer and everyone looks forward to an excuse to get together and party. Happy Birthday U.S.A.  Let’s party!

Customer Service #1 0

Customer Service Before I became employed at Card & Party Giant at the end of 2014, it was more than 40 years since I last was in retail. Back then it was a sales and cashier position for a national women’s yellow accessoriesclothing chain. I worked on the second floor of the downtown Chicago store and was responsible for knowing the casual clothing line inventory. I helped stock racks and package damaged items for return. I rang sales and helped customers.  Working as a sales clerk and cashier taught me valuable lessons about how to treat customers, about the importance of knowing the store’s inventory, and to always check and double check when ringing a sale or making change. These are simple, sound principles that carry through whether you’re selling women’s clothing or party supplies. At Card & Party Giant, my primary role is bookkeeper. That means I spend more time in the back room than on the floor. Occasionally I offer assistance on the floor, but I know at least for the time being I lack the confidence of knowing the inventory. While it may be easy, for example, to learn where the “everyday” tableware is located, it has not been as easy for me to recall where to lead a customer looking for a specific birthday party theme. I also struggle with the seasonal items - patriotic party goods for Memorial Day or 4th of July, Luau party designs for a perfect summer theme, greeting cards that rotate based on the holiday, season, or event. Graduation decorations and balloons. Oh yes, and speaking of balloons, there’s packaged balloons, latex and mylar balloons that come in a variety of colors – including neon and patterns. There are sports-themed balloons, school logo balloons, licensed-character designs. And for the convenience of customers, they come in different sizes with options that include hi-float to keep helium inflated balloons for a longer period of time. Some of the Card & Party Giant staff can customize these expertly designed centerpieces using balloons and decorative holders.  I must confess, I am impressed! This has been an education for me. I learned that many people purchase dress-up accessories for their graduation parties, and have learned to identify the location for quite a few interesting accessories that are available in most of the local school colors. Things like oversized sunglasses, wigs, and temporary tattoos are apparent favorites. Parents also seem to favor banners to congratulate their son or daughter.  I discovered that piñatas ready to stuff with delicious candies and party favors are available in various sizes and designs. This store really has so much to offer! I am still perhaps the slowest helper on the floor (if and when called upon to assist), but at least I am learning and hope to one day be able to help out in a much more meaningful way because Card & Party Giant is really all about customer service. Until then, I can only continue to thank the customers for their patience and appreciation.

We're Taking the Party Outdoors 0

That’s right, it’s spring in the Midwest, and we’ve taken to getting ready for entertaining on thein-the-shade-summer-party-supplies-1 deck, the patio, or in the backyard. No more snow. No more freezing temps. We’re busy planning and can’t wait to see our friends and family. From Memorial Day to 4th of July to Labor Day, we’re going to enjoy picnics and barbecue’s, pool parties and just good old-fashioned outdoor fun. In my family there is at least one major picnic. The big event is at my brother’s lake house in July. Extended family members pull out their camping gear, prepare their menus, and pack their cars with everything they need for a weekend of fun. Swim suits, sleeping bags, snacks and salads, Frisbees and bean bag toss, party goods, even decorations – everything goes into the car and off we go to Michigan. Ants and mosquitoes be damned, it’s our party! Summer is our season. And after the winter we just had, we’ve earned it! The party might not be until July, but we’re already thinking about it. That’s why we’re stocking up on party supplies - colorful paper plates and napkins for the summer celebration. No need to run the dishwasher. In fact, there is no dishwasher at the summer cottage. But we’re ready. We’ve got disposable pint glasses, our fancy margarita glasses and champagne flutes to toast the season. We’ve got our supply of patriotic party goods – those red, white and blue plates and napkins for Memorial Day and the 4th of July, and we also have a collection of all those pretty pastel and Hawaiian Luau party designs. Won’t matter which we take to Michigan because all anyone cares about is getting together and making memories. Memories created by several generations gathering together for one weekend each year, becoming reacquainted with distant cousins and great grand nieces and nephews. We count on a hot, sunny day so the kids can play in the water and build sand castles on the beach. And the years when the weather does not comply, we pull out our sweatshirts and light the camp fire a little earlier in the evening. Instead of water and sand play we fill the day with games and activities until it’s time to roast the marshmallows and get out the guitar for an evening of song and camaraderie. It’s only spring but I can already taste the party. It tastes like summer, a most refreshing tingle to the palate.   #patrioticparty #partysupplies #MemorialDay #July4th #LaborDay #luauparty
